Your questions answered

At HeartBeat Heroes Association, we believe that informed individuals are empowered individuals. We're dedicated to providing high-quality training and education, and we want to ensure all your concerns are addressed. Below are answers to questions we often receive.

Can I get sued if I perform CPR incorrectly?

Good Samaritan laws in many states, including Virginia, generally protect individuals who provide emergency assistance in good faith. While specific legal protections can vary, the intent is to encourage people to help without fear of legal repercussions. We encourage everyone to learn proper techniques to maximize effectiveness and confidence.

Can I break someone's ribs or kill them if I do CPR wrong?

While it's possible to cause injuries like broken ribs during CPR, these are often unavoidable given the force required to effectively compress the chest and circulate blood. The alternative of doing nothing is far graver. Effective CPR, even with potential injuries, significantly increases the chances of survival for someone in cardiac arrest. Our training focuses on correct hand placement and compression depth to minimize risks while maximizing effectiveness.

Do I need to perform mouth-to-mouth, or can I do Hands-Only CPR?

Hands-Only CPR is recommended for adults who suddenly collapse. It involves continuous chest compressions without mouth-to-mouth breaths and has been shown to be as effective as conventional CPR for the first few minutes, particularly when performed by untrained bystanders. For children, infants, or drownings, conventional CPR with rescue breaths is generally still recommended. We cover both techniques in our comprehensive training programs.

Which CPR certification level do I need?

The appropriate certification level depends on your personal or professional requirements. We offer various courses, including Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare providers, Heartsaver CPR AED for lay rescuers, and specialized training for childcare professionals. Our team can help you determine the best course for your needs. Please contact us or visit our CPR Training Programs page for more details.

How often do I need to renew my certification?

Most CPR and first aid certifications are valid for two years. Regular renewal ensures that your skills remain fresh and up-to-date with the latest guidelines. We offer convenient recertification courses to help you maintain your readiness.

What if I struggle during the training?

If a student is committed to learning and demonstrates a genuine desire to master the skills, they cannot fail the class. It may require some remediation for unsatisfactory performance, but we are committed to ensuring our students leave our training fully competent and confident in their abilities.

What is the most important advice about emergencies?

An emergency can happen anytime, anywhere, and to anyone. Being prepared with CPR and first aid knowledge can make a critical difference in saving a life. Even if you don't take a class right away, understanding the importance of early intervention and calling for help can be life-saving.
